Wyatt Wolberg delivered a standout offensive performance with three hits and four runs batted in, powering the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds to a 12-2 victory over the Manawa Wolves Varsity on Thursday at Taylor Field.

Wolberg provided the biggest blow of the game with a three-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. He also doubled in the first inning, helping the Thunderbirds erase an early deficit and set the tone for a lopsided win.

The Wolves jumped ahead 2-0 at the top of the first inning. Carson Stroud singled, and the Wolves pushed across two runs to take the early advantage.

Iola-Scandinavia responded immediately in the bottom half. Two doubles, including Wolberg’s two-bagger, tied the game at 2-2. The Thunderbirds grabbed their first lead in the bottom of the third when Mason Kriesel hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a run for a 3-2 edge.

Iola-Scandinavia then broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits. Broghan Gullixon singled in a run, Wolberg followed with his three-run homer, Carson Desrochers added a sacrifice fly, and Jose Gutierrez singled home another run to make it 9-2. The Thunderbirds added three more runs later to reach their final total of 12.

Mason Morfey earned the win on the mound for Iola-Scandinavia. He worked four innings, allowing two hits and two runs, one of them earned. Morfey struck out eight batters and walked one. Gutierrez followed with a clean inning of relief, striking out one and walking one while not allowing a hit or run.

Stroud took the loss for Manawa. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, surrendering nine runs on 12 hits. Stroud struck out five and walked five.

Iola-Scandinavia collected 13 hits overall. Wolberg and Ben Gruba each had three hits to pace the lineup. Desrochers and Gullixon added multiple hits apiece. Kriesel drew three walks as the Thunderbirds showed strong plate discipline, totaling six free passes.

The Thunderbirds also dominated on the basepaths with seven stolen bases. Gullixon and Gruba each swiped multiple bags. Iola-Scandinavia turned one double play defensively.

For Manawa, Brody Rosin, and Stroud each recorded one hit. The Wolves also turned one double play.

The Thunderbirds improved to dominate the contest through timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong pitching. Wolberg’s four RBI accounted for a significant portion of the scoring, while the fourth-inning outburst effectively ended any chance of a Wolves comeback.

Iola-Scandinavia will be at home Tuesday, May 26, to face Auburndale.
