Iola’s historic Iola Mill is set to welcome a true Wisconsin music treasure on Saturday, May 30. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Willy Porter returns to his home-state roots for an intimate evening of guitar-driven grit, soul, silence, and muscle that has captivated audiences for more than three decades.

Born on Oct. 4, 1964, in Mequon, Wisconsin, Porter grew up in a state that has long nurtured thoughtful, roots-oriented songwriters. He spent his early years on Milwaukee’s East Side before his family moved to Mequon. He picked up the guitar around age 13, initially exploring classical technique before gravitating toward folk, contemporary acoustic music (think Bob Dylan and Joan Baez influences), and traditional songwriting. He later dipped into rock ‘n’ roll bands and even worked as a guitar tech in high school.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Porter is largely self-taught on his primary instrument, developing a distinctive, inventive fingerstyle approach that blends technical fluency with raw emotional power.

Porter’s musical genre is best described as contemporary singer-songwriter rock with strong threads of blues, jazz, folk, and acoustic exploration. His work echoes the introspective depth of artists like John Fahey while adding a modern, personal edge. Songs weave universal perspectives on the questions, struggles, and triumphs of human existence, delivered with wry storytelling and a voice that fuses seamlessly with his fretwork. Live, expect dynamic shifts, from electrifying intensity to quiet introspection, that make each performance feel unique and alive.

His journey began in earnest in the late 1980s while living in Madison, where he started sharing his guitar playing and storytelling with local audiences. In 1990, he released his first full-length independent album, The Trees Have Soul, on his own Weasel Records label. That release marked the beginning of a remarkable touring life that has seen him log millions of miles across America, Canada, the UK, and Europe — both as a solo artist and with various iterations of the Willy Porter Band. He has shared stages and supported icons including Tori Amos, Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, Sting, and Jeff Beck.

Over more than 35 years, Porter has released around 14 albums, each deepening his reputation for heartfelt lyricism, improvisational flair, and exceptional guitar work. Recent releases like The Ravine continue to showcase his ability to traverse a wide emotional spectrum.

His commitment to the road and to honest songcraft has earned him enduring respect in the acoustic and roots music scenes. In 2023, the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) inducted him into its Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor for one of Milwaukee’s (and Wisconsin’s) finest musical exports.

Today, based in Milwaukee with his wife and two children, Porter continues his musical and personal odyssey with the same inquisitive love for humanity that has defined his work from the start. His songs don’t just entertain, they invite listeners to reflect on what we all hold true.
