The following statement from Village President Jennifer Schustek was read by David Harper at the June 8 Special Board meeting.

Jennifer Schustek, Iola Village President

Good afternoon.

I would first like to apologize for not being able to attend today’s special meeting. Due to a prior work commitment, I am unable to be here in person. I appreciate the Board’s willingness to meet today.

I asked that this special meeting be scheduled because I believe it is important to act promptly now that the circumstances surrounding this application have changed. The Thirsty Perch is an important business in our community, and once an applicant meets the legal requirements established under Wisconsin law and the Village’s licensing process, I believe the Board has a responsibility to consider that application without unnecessary delay.

Over the past year, I have consistently maintained that the Village’s actions were never about preventing a business from operating. They were about ensuring that all applicants met the legal qualifications required to hold a liquor license. Throughout this process, the Board made clear what changes were needed before the application could move forward.

I appreciate that Sherri and Steve have now taken the steps necessary to address those concerns and have chosen to follow the guidance that was previously provided by their legal counsel. Their efforts to resolve those issues have made it possible for the Village to move forward with today’s consideration.

I also want to thank the members of the Village Board, our Village Clerks, legal counsel, law enforcement, and everyone else who has worked diligently throughout this process. While there have been differing opinions, I believe everyone involved has shared the same goal: protecting the integrity of the licensing process while supporting businesses that contribute to our community.

It is my hope that today’s meeting allows the Village to move forward in a positive direction. I wish The Thirsty Perch success in its future operations, and I look forward to seeing it contribute to the continued growth and vitality of the Village of Iola.

Thank you.

Jennifer Schustek
