Standout individual performances from Revyn Schrank and Evan Linger highlighted the day for the Iola-Scandinavia cross-country teams Sept. 19 at the Smiley Invitational.

Competing in the Division 3 fields at Wausau East High School, Schrank secured a fourth-place individual finish to lead the Thunderbirds girls to a ninth-place team finish. Linger cracked the top 10 in the boys’ race, powering the Thunderbirds boys to seventh place overall.

In the girls’ race, Schrank went toe-to-toe with the division’s elite, crossing the finish line in a swift 20:38.6. Her top-five finish anchored an Iola-Scandinavia squad that compiled 164 points in an 11-team field. Allie Sylla of Independence/Gilman won the individual crown in 19:59.0, while Sheboygan Area Lutheran claimed the team title with 100 points.

The Thunderbirds girls showcased their depth by placing three additional runners in the top 50. Nola Mae Vater delivered a strong performance, taking 16th place in 22:22.5. Sophia Hausknect and Abby Swiertz finished back-to-back to round out the local pack, with Hausknect taking 46th in 25:25.9 and Swiertz placing 47th in 25:31.6.

In the boys’ division, Linger set the pace for the Thunderbirds. He led the lineup, taking 10th place in 18:32.3. His performance helped Iola-Scandinavia total 205 points to secure seventh place out of 12 teams.

Two other Thunderbirds boys fought their way into the top 50. Andy Holder earned 33rd place with a time of 20:26.7. Parker Poehlman claimed the final top-50 spot of the day, crossing the line in 50th place with a time of 21:56.9.

Sheboygan Area Lutheran dominated the front of the boys’ race, winning the team title with 34 points behind individual champion Eddy Giebler, who won in 16:18.5.
