Northland Lutheran Church will host its 108th Annual Lutefisk Supper and Norwegian Bake & Craft Sale on Saturday, October 17, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. The church is located at N9880 State Highway 49, Iola.
The congregation will serve an all-you-can-eat, family-style meal featuring traditional Norwegian dishes, including lutefisk and torsk (boiled cod), hand-rolled meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, lefse, buttered carrots, coleslaw, and cranberries. Desserts will include rosettes, sandbakkels, krumkakes, and fattigmann cookies.
The Norwegian Bake & Craft Sale will offer lefse, Norwegian pastries, homemade pies, quick breads, brownies, cookies, and other baked goods.
Gagas Farms has donated 300 pounds of potatoes for this year’s supper. Church members and volunteers will prepare approximately 500 pounds of lutefisk, 300 pounds of meatballs, and more than 35 cases of lefse.
Tickets will be available at the door. Cost is $24 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under.
Northland Lutheran Church began its annual supper in 1915. The congregation has held the event every year except three: during World War I, during a flu epidemic, and in 2020 because of COVID-19. Chicken originally appeared on the menu before the congregation adopted the traditional Norwegian dishes served today.
Lutefisk is whitefish that has been dried and rehydrated before cooking. The traditional dish is served with melted butter.
Northland Lutheran Church has served the Northland community since 1908. The congregation is affiliated with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC).
Pastor Bill Stukenberg leads worship services every Sunday at 10 a.m., with Sunday school at 9 a.m. Services are also livestreamed on Facebook. The church’s purpose is “To worship God, spread His word, witness for Christ, welcome all, serve them, and grow the community of believers through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
