CATCH A RIDE CONTROVERSY: Waupaca County Supervisor Joel Bartel is questioning spending $2.2 million of the county budget on the Catch A Ride Program. “With projected budget of 2.2 million, rural Waupaca County taxpayers should not be subsidizing a service that primarily benefits the City of Waupaca, where more than 5,200 rides occurred in just 5 months,” he posted on the Waupaca County Board D20 News Facebook page.
NEW LONDON CANDIDATE ANNOUNCES ASSEMBLY BID: Shawna Riley of New London announced her candidacy for Wisconsin State Assembly District 56. She cited a personal mission to improve local representation and community issues.

Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941, sending more than 3 million troops across a broad front into the Soviet Union in the largest invasion in history. The attack broke the 1939 nonaggression pact and opened the brutal Eastern Front of World War II.
LOUIS KNOCKS OUT SCHMELING. Heavyweight champion Joe Louis defeated German boxer Max Schmeling by first-round knockout on June 22, 1938, at Yankee Stadium in New York. The politically charged rematch symbolized American resistance to Nazi ideology.

MARADONA SCORES HAND OF GOD GOAL. Argentine star Diego Maradona punched the ball into the net undetected on June 22, 1986, in a World Cup quarterfinal against England in Mexico City. Argentina won 2-1 en route to the championship.
