The Iola Revitalization Committee approved spending up to $2,200 for hanging planters at the Covered Bridge and $100 for flowers around a truck and sign near Premier Bank during its meeting on May 6.

Village of Iola President Jennifer Schustek called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. at the Iola Village Hall Clerk’s Office, 180 South Main Street. The committee reviewed upcoming events and community improvement projects.

Heather Hoyord provided updates on the “Junk in the Trunk” sale scheduled for May 16 at the Car Show Grounds. Shannon Huettner planned to assist sellers, and Goodwill accepted on-site donations.

On the hanging planters project, Hoyord shared plans to install them at the Covered Bridge. She obtained estimates for the plants and planters. Schustek made a motion to approve up to $2,200 for the project, which was seconded by Iola-Scandinavia Chamber of Commerce President Greg Loescher. The motion passed unanimously. The committee also approved a $100 donation for flowers around the truck and a sign by Premier Bank.

Committee members received project cost estimates from Joe Opperman, Iola Car Show executive director, for a baseball foul ball net at $1,000, a Farmers Market sign at $425, and rip rap work around the peninsula. Options for the rip rap ranged from $43,690 for limestone to $59,735 for cobble.

Additional updates included plans for an inspection of ballpark light poles and progress on business assistance letters. Missy Fenn reported that two letters prompted requests for assistance and that applications would be shared with the committee as received.
