The Iola Lions Club and the American Red Cross hold a community blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness and Aquatic Center in Iola, pairing a familiar hometown gathering place with an urgent push to rebuild the nation’s blood supply.

For a town whose fitness center serves as a hub for recreation and community activity, the event turns that public space into a place of service as well. Organizers say severe weather across the country contributes to critical blood shortages, and they stress that donors help hospitals meet continuing patient needs. All blood types are needed, especially type O-positive, making the drive both a local event and part of a broader response to a national need.

Donors who give on June 3 receive ice cream sundaes in a nod to June Dairy Month, along with a $15 e-gift card and automatic entry for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards. The donation process takes about an hour, according to the release, and organizers ask participants to preregister with the Red Cross and complete a RapidPass on the morning of the drive if possible. Please call 1-800-redcross or go to www.redcrossblood.org to pre-register.

The timing adds another layer of purpose. World Blood Donor Day arrives on June 14, giving the Iola event added relevance as summer begins and blood centers work to stabilize the blood supply. In a community built around showing up for games, workouts, and one another, the June 3 drive offers residents a simple way to turn an hour into help that can last far longer.
