Trailing 15-12 in the eighth inning at home, the Iola-Scandinavia softball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win in dramatic fashion over Amherst, 16-15, in a CWC-East showdown!

With one out, sophomore Maggie Maus hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Braelyn Jueds from third base for the winning run. The win improves the Thunderbirds’ conference record to 5-3 and their overall record to 8-3.

The game went back and forth several times.

The T-Birds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Amherst scored three runs in the second inning and added two more runs in the third inning for a 5-2 lead. Iola-Scandinavia scored four runs in the fourth inning, but the Falcons responded with one run in the fifth inning to tie the score, 6-6.

The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the fifth inning and four more runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-6 lead. Amherst rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, 12-12.

The T-Birds didn’t score in the bottom half of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Iola-Scandinavia responded with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.

Ten different Thunderbirds got at least one hit as the T-Birds outhit Amherst 21-18.

Maus not only drove in the winning run, but she had four hits, including a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Maus finished the game with five RBIs.

Jueds and Maya Munoz each had three hits. Jueds had a run-scoring single in the eighth inning, and Munoz had two run-scoring singles. Brooklyn Berrens, Rayanne Clendenning, Jueds and Katie Rosenthal each had two hits.

Berrens hit a leadoff solo homerun in the sixth inning and a two-run double in the eighth inning. Clendenning had a double in the fifth inning. Jueds had a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Charlotte Isermann pitched the final two outs in the eighth inning to pick up the win for the T-Birds. Pitcher Clendenning started the game and pitched the first seven innings. She allowed four walks and three strikeouts.

The varsity team will host Menominee Nation today, May 5, in a CWC-East game. The game will start at 4:30 p.m.
