The Helvetia Town Board approved the purchase of a commercial chainsaw and accepted road repair bids for several town roads during its regular meeting on May 5 at the Town Hall.
Chairman Jeff Opper called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with all board members present. Three residents, including David Loken, attended. The board approved the minutes of the previous and annual meetings and approved the town bills after correcting a timesheet entry. The treasurer’s report was also accepted.
In new business, Loken of Rural Mutual Insurance updated the board on its policy. He clarified coverage for personal property and the need to add capital purchases to the policy.
The board scheduled its Board of Review for May 12 from 5-7 p.m. and noted that Open Book was conducted that same day remotely.
Mike Grassl reported on the recent Fire and Ambulance meeting, noting that 2 percent fire dues are due in July.
Under town projects, the board planned to redo the hall floors in June. Grassl and Justin Hintz presented pricing for a 362C commercial-series chainsaw. The board voted unanimously to spend $1,075, including chain, to purchase the saw. Dave Jueds completed sound-reduction ceiling panels for the hall; Grassl was to pick up hardware, and the board planned to install the six 4-by-8-foot panels.
On roads, the board discussed county highway delays in storm-damage repairs. Chad was to patch Oak Grove Road with help from Mike as needed, while Carper Road had no reported start date. The board reviewed bids from Scotts Construction for work on Lutz, Swamp, Pagel, and Aastrud roads. It decided to omit the Aastrud Road bid and approved the bids for the other three roads on a motion by Justin Hintz, seconded by Grassl.
Road brushing and cleanup will continue, with Opper and Grassl participating. The board planned to complete additional road cleanup before the next meeting. Storm damage signs and other safety signs were ordered, including for Georgeson Road, County Hwy OO and a 90-degree turn sign.
