The Amherst Varsity Falcons erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh inning, overcoming an early deficit to defeat the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds 5-3 on Monday, May 4, at Taylor Field.
The Falcons trailed 2-0 entering the seventh before sending six hits to the plate and taking a 5-2 lead. A two-run double by Michael Glodowski highlighted the decisive rally. Amherst added one more insurance run and held on for the victory.
Iola-Scandinavia scratched across its first two runs in the bottom of the second. Mason Morfey singled down the left-field line, and Broghan Gullixon walked. Each player scored to give the Thunderbirds the early advantage.
Amherst starter Glodowski worked five innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. He struck out six and walked four. Daniel Juarez earned the win in relief, throwing two innings. He gave up four hits and one run, with one strikeout and one walk.
Morfey started on the mound for Iola-Scandinavia and delivered a strong six-inning effort. He allowed four hits and no runs, striking out five and walking three. The Thunderbirds added a final run later but could not mount a serious threat in the closing frames.
Morfey paced the Iola-Scandinavia offense, going 2 for 3. Gullixon, Wyatt Wolberg, and Morfey each drove in one run. Morfey also stole two bases as the Thunderbirds swiped four in the game. The visitors played error-free defense, with Gullixon handling a game-high six chances in the field.
The Falcons collected 10 hits. Jackskon Lutz, Cash Cullen, and Wyatt Beaudoin each had two hits, while Glodowski and Beaudoin drove in two runs apiece. Amherst also stole four bases and turned one double play.
The Thunderbirds showed resilience after the late surge but fell short in the late innings. Their pitching kept them in contention through six frames, but the Falcons’ offensive burst proved too much.
Iola-Scandinavia will look to bounce back when it faces Menominee Nation today at home. The game starts at 4:30 p.m.
