I am deeply disappointed to report that sometime between 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, someone stole the American flag flying on the flagpole along State Highway 49 outside the Pine Crest Office Building in the Village of Iola.

The individual or individuals responsible cut the lines securing the flag, causing it to fall to the ground before taking it. This act is more than the theft of property. The American flag symbolizes our nation, our freedoms, and the values shared by our community. Its theft represents a loss not only to the Village of Iola and Waupaca County, but also to the ideals it stands for.

If someone desired an American flag but could not afford one, arrangements could likely have been made to provide one. Instead, someone unlawfully took a respected symbol of our country.

The Village of Iola Police Department is currently investigating the matter. Attorney Forsythe has also indicated that if the flag is returned promptly, no questions will be asked.

A substantial reward is being offered for information leading to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for the theft. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Omholt & Forsythe, S.C. at (715) 445-2511 or by email at iolalaw@yahoo.com. You may also provide information to the Iola Police Department at (715) 445-4353.

I urge anyone with knowledge of this incident to come forward and help return this important symbol to its rightful place in our community.

Sincerely,

David L. Forsythe
