The Wisconsin Assembly passed a comprehensive public safety legislative package today, March 13, aimed at enhancing protections for schools and communities while strengthening the state’s criminal justice system. State Rep. Brent Jacobson (R-Mosinee) joined his Republican colleagues in supporting the measures, emphasizing the importance of holding offenders accountable and ensuring justice for victims.
Jacobson is a member of the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety.
“The role of government is to safeguard our communities and ensure there are consequences for those who break the law,” Rep. Jacobson said. “By passing this package, we are reaffirming our commitment to protecting our constituents and upholding justice.”
The legislative package includes multiple bills addressing criminal justice policies. Among them, two bills authored by Rep. Jacobson received approval in the Assembly:
AB 66: This bill mandates that prosecutors seek court approval before dismissing or amending seven specific criminal charges, including sexual assault, crimes against children, and illegal firearm possession by felons. It also prohibits deferred prosecution agreements for these charges.
AB 85: Under this bill, Department of Corrections agents would be required to recommend revoking parole, probation, or extended release for individuals who commit new crimes while under state supervision.
Rep. Jacobson underscored the importance of ensuring repeat offenders face appropriate consequences. “While I support giving people a second chance, it is unacceptable to allow habitual offenders to continue endangering families and communities,” he stated.
The legislation now moves to the Wisconsin Senate for further consideration. If passed, these measures could bring significant changes to the state’s approach to criminal prosecution and offender supervision.
