School Bus Driver Appreciation Week is  Feb. 9-13. Communities across Wisconsin are pausing to recognize the tireless efforts of the state’s more than 12,000 school bus drivers, who collectively log over 144 million miles annually to safely transport hundreds of thousands of students to and from school each day.

These dedicated professionals do far more than navigate busy streets and unpredictable weather; they serve as the first and last point of contact for many children, fostering a welcoming and secure environment that sets the tone for a successful school day.

School bus drivers are the unsung heroes of our education system. Their patience, kindness, and commitment ensure students arrive ready to learn, while also handling responsibilities like maintaining order on the bus and assisting students with special needs.

Beyond their daily duties, Wisconsin school bus drivers often go above and beyond in moments of crisis, demonstrating quick thinking and heroism to protect their young passengers. For instance, in January 2025, Adams-Friendship School District bus driver Jamie Smoczyk was hailed as a hero after she stopped her bus mid-route and performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a 9-year-old student who was choking on a bracelet.

The incident, captured on camera, highlights the critical first aid training many drivers receive, turning potential tragedies into stories of survival.

Such acts are not isolated, underscoring the broader impact of these drivers on student safety. According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation data, in school bus-related crashes over the past two decades, over 90 percent of occupants emerged uninjured, a testament to drivers’ vigilance and the robust safety protocols in place.

However, the state faces ongoing challenges, including a nearly 18 percent decline in licensed school bus drivers over the last 15 years, which amplifies the importance of appreciating those who remain on the job.

This appreciation week offers a perfect chance for parents, students, teachers, administrators, and motorists to express gratitude. Simple gestures like a “thank you” note or encouraging respectful behavior on the bus can make a significant difference, easing the drivers’ workload and enhancing safety for all.

As Wisconsin continues to prioritize student transportation, these drivers remain true pillars of the community, ensuring reliable and safe journeys that support the educational journey of the state’s youth.
