School Bus Driver Appreciation Week is Feb. 9-13. Communities across Wisconsin are pausing to recognize the tireless efforts of the state’s more than 12,000 school bus drivers, who collectively log over 144 million miles annually to safely transport hundreds of thousands of students to and from school each day.

For instance, in January 2025, Adams-Friendship School District bus driver Jamie Smoczyk was hailed as a hero after she stopped her bus mid-route and performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a 9-year-old student who was choking on a bracelet.

Such acts are not isolated, underscoring the broader impact of these drivers on student safety. According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation data, in school bus-related crashes over the past two decades, over 90 percent of occupants emerged uninjured, a testament to drivers’ vigilance and the robust safety protocols in place.
However, the state faces ongoing challenges, including a nearly 18 percent decline in licensed school bus drivers over the last 15 years, which amplifies the importance of appreciating those who remain on the job.
