Around Town
LAKE IOLA WEED HARVESTING: The Lake Iola Lake District management board faces continued challenges over weed harvesting permits. Six years after launching a weed harvesting program to boost summer recreation, the DNR reduced the allowed cutting area from 45 to 35 acres, despite stakeholder and consultant support for the larger map. The board’s request to restore the 45-acre permit was again denied, with the DNR citing the change as too significant. The DNR insists that only the smaller map will be approved for multi-year permits. The issue will be discussed at the board’s public meeting on Thursday, March 5, at 6 p.m. in Iola Village Hall.

OBAMACARE FOR PETS?: Radio personality Dan O’Donnell indicated that, “Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature are circulating a bill that would essentially create Obamacare for pets. You know, because Obamacare for people has worked so well…” The bill, LRB-5624/1, is being backed by Sen. Jamie Wall and Assemblyman Steve Doyle. It creates a legal framework in which pet insurance can be sold in the state, allows policy returns, establishes rules on exclusions, waiting periods, and claim denials, and mandates transparency and disclosure, among other requirements.
