Town of Scandinavia Iola Car Show and Faulks Bros Conditional Use Jan. 11 Informational Meeting minutes

Scandinavia Municipal Center

A motion was made by Marvin Peterson, Town of Scandinavia Planning Commission, to call the meeting to order at 5:28 p.m. in the Scandinavia Municipal Center. Motion seconded by Erik Sheppelman, Town of Scandinavia Planning Commission. Motion carried.

The meeting was supposed to start at 5 p.m. and be held in the Community Room, but there were more people in attendance than the room could hold, so the meeting was moved over to the Town of Scandinavia Fire Department garage.

Gary Marx, Town of Scandinavia Chairman, started the meeting by reviewing the agenda. He read all of the email correspondence opposed to the project and all of the email correspondence received in favor of the project.

Presentations from the following entities followed the correspondence reading.

Waupaca County Zoning Ryan Brown explained the CUP for the project and how it is handled on the County level.

Concerns from Residents (included) Greg Ambrosius, County J, Iola, and Laura Scott, Olsen Road, Iola. Both had a Power Point display and spoke for the residents who are concerned about the project.

Faulk Bros. Construction (was represented by) Jon Faulks, President, and Mark Weinreis, Project Manager. Mark spoke about the operation of the project (Phase 1 and Phase 2), and the reclamation plan. He addressed concerns that were brought up in the other presentations. There was time at the end for Q&A.

The following people spoke: Ali Johnson-Iola, Amy Ording-Iola, Erik Sheppelman-Scandinavia, Greg Ambrosius-Iola, Theresa L-Iola, Angela Williamson-Manawa, Terry Gerlach-retired geologist.

Iola Car Show Inc.: Charlie Wasrud, spoke on behalf of the Iola Car Show Board of Directors and as the organizer of the Ride for Heroes event which is held on the Iola Car Show grounds and campground. Joe Opperman, Executive Director. Spoke about the Iola Car Show and all the good it does for the community of Iola and the surrounding communities that provide the volunteer hours. He spoke about the weather-related challenges they face each year and what if there was another “pandemic” and the show is shut down. How these events will affect the show and the money the volunteers receive form the event to help support their organizations. There was time at the end for Q&A.

Public Comment: Speakers were asked to limit their time to 1-2 minutes.

Next Steps: Gary Marx asked Joe Opperman and Greg Ambrosius to meet and see if they work out some compromises and me with Gary.
