The Town of Iola Board of Review will be held on Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in the town hall.
The meeting will cover a variety of topics related to the town’s assessment roll and other important municipal matters.
The meeting will begin with a call to order and roll call, followed by the confirmation of notices for the Board of Review and Open Meetings. The Board will select a chairperson and vice-chairperson to lead the session. Members will verify that they have met the mandatory training requirements.
One key focus of the meeting will be the ordinance for the confidentiality of income and expense information provided to the assessor, which was originally passed on March 25, 2019. The Board will discuss new laws and revisit existing policies regarding sworn telephone and written testimony, as well as the procedure for waiving hearing requests, which were both adopted in the 2018 Board of Review.
The Board will review the annual assessment report from the Assessor’s office and receive the assessment roll from the clerk. Members will perform statutory duties, including examining the roll for errors, adding omitted properties, and eliminating double-assessed properties. Any necessary corrections will be certified under state law.
Open book changes will be verified with the assessor to ensure inclusion in the assessment roll. The Board will then allow taxpayers to examine the assessment data and will consider requests such as waivers of required 48-hour notice of intent to file an objection and requests for telephone testimony or sworn written statements.
Additional items on the agenda include hearing objections, considering subpoenas, and acting on any other legally required Board of Review items. The Board will also review notices of intent to file objections and may consider scheduling additional meeting dates as needed.
This annual meeting of the Town of Iola Board of Review is crucial for maintaining transparency and ensuring fairness in the town’s assessment process. Residents are encouraged to attend or follow the meeting proceedings to stay informed about the local government’s decisions and actions.
