FATAL CRASH: One person was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in the Town of Fremont, Waupaca County. Authorities say around 10:30 a.m., a truck and trailer traveling east on U.S. Highway 10 collided with a northbound car on Old Highway 49. The car’s driver died at the scene; the truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

IMPERSONATING OFFICERS BILL: A bill that would hike the penalty for impersonating a police officer in Wisconsin from a misdemeanor to a felony passed the state Assembly and now sits in the state Senate. In Wisconsin, a conviction for a Class A misdemeanor — the current penalty for impersonating a police officer — carries up to a $10,000 fine or up to nine months in jail or both. A conviction for a Class I felony, the designation legislators are aiming for, comes with a fine of up to $10,000 and as many as three and a half years in prison. Read The Badger Project story here.
CHALLENGE OF FINDING LEGAL FARM HELP: The temporary visa program lets South African worker Monty Lilford earn a living in Wisconsin but offers no path to permanent residency. His employer, Mike Bushman, relies on the program for legal labor, citing legal risks in hiring undocumented workers. Read the story in Wausau Pilot & Review here.
VOTING CHALLENGE: The Wisconsin Department of Justice has appealed a judge’s order requiring state officials to search for non-citizen voters and verify citizenship for new registrants. Judge Michael Maxwell’s ruling mandated cross-referencing voter registrations with state records, but his requirement to stop accepting new registrations without proof of citizenship is on hold during the appeal process.
