Filing deadline is Jan. 2, 2023
December 1 opened the period for candidates to circulate nomination papers for the 2023 Spring Election.
In the aftermath of the contentious November election, some individuals now want to know how to run for office and who may be up for election so those persons may be questioned about important issues pertinent to their elected responsibilities.
This article will give you that information.
The basics for filing for elected office
Local public offices open for election on April 4, 2023, include Waupaca County Board of Supervisors, Iola-Scandinavia School District, the villages of Iola and Scandinavia, and the townships of Iola, Scandinavia, Helvetia, and Harrison.
The minimum qualifications to hold public office are: (1) You must be a U.S. citizen. (2) You must be at least 18 years of age. (3) You must satisfy residency requirement for specific office. (4) You may not have been convicted of a felony in any court in the United States unless pardoned by the conviction. Also a candidate may not be disqualified by virtue of one or more of the impediments describe din s 6.03, Wis. Stats.
To register as a write-in candidate, you must file a Campaign Registration Statement (CF-1) with the filing office prior to collecting or spending any money on the campaign. The form is available from the local filing officer such as the clerk of the governmental entity. The deadline to register as a write-in candidate is noon the Friday before the election.
Deadlines for 2023 Spring Election
Jan. 2 – Deadline of 5 p.m. for candidates to file nomination papers, declarations of candidacy, and campaign registration statements with the filing officer.
Jan. 31 – Deadline for municipal clerks to send absentee ballots to electors with valid requests on file for the Spring Primary.
Feb. 21 – Spring Primary Election (if needed).
March 31 – Deadline for write-in candidates to file a Campaign Registration Statement (CF-1) with the local filing clerk.
April 4 – Spring General Election
