
The Iola-Scandinavia varsity golf team faced stiff competition on Monday, May 19, at the Bonduel Invitational held at Golden Sands Golf Club, Cecil, Wisconsin, finishing ninth out of 11 teams with a team total of 392 strokes.
In an event dominated by strong individual and team performances, Bonduel claimed the top spot with a score of 344, edging out Lena by a single stroke. Lena finished second with a 345.
Leading the charge for the Thunderbirds was sophomore Mike Kirmse, who carded an impressive 89 to place 15th overall. Senior Samuel Groeschl also delivered a solid round, finishing with a 92.
Juniors Ryan Barden and Preston Poehlman, along with sophomore Dawson Nusz, rounded out the scoring. Barden shot a 102, Nusz followed with a 109, and Poehlman completed the round at 118.
At the top of the leaderboard, Lena senior Mason Spice and Weyauwega-Fremont junior Cole Haeuser shared medalist honors with matching scores of 75. Spice fired a 36 on the front nine and 39 on the back, while Haeuser reversed the split with 39 out and a 36 in. Bonduel’s Colin Fischer, a senior, finished close behind with a 77.
