Simonis shines as Iola-Scandinavia finishes 5fth at Greenwood Hills Invitational

WAUSAU – Under partly cloudy skies on May 13, the Iola-Scandinavia varsity golf team delivered a gritty performance at the Greenwood Hills Golf Course, securing a fifth-place finish among 10 competitive teams. The tournament, hosted on the challenging par-72 layout, saw Amherst emerge as the top team with a commanding score of 334, while Iola-Scandinavia carded a team total of 374.

The highlight of the day for the Thunderbirds came courtesy of senior Samuel Groeschl and sophomore Mike Kirmse, who each posted an 86. Their efforts earned them a tie for sixth place individually, showcasing consistency and poise in the face of a talented field.

Dawson Nusz, a sophomore, added a 99 to the team’s tally. Junior Ryan Barden chipped in a 103. Preston Poehlman, also a junior, rounded out the scoring with a 112.

The individual crown went to Amherst’s senior standout Trent Simonis, who fired a stellar 75 to take medalist honors. Bonduel’s Jaxon Bogacz and Colin Fischer followed in second and third place, respectively, with scores of 79 and 81.
