Simonis, Groeschl share medalist honors as T-Birds place fourth at Marion Invite

At Perry’s Landing Golf Course, Iola-Scandinavia’s varsity golf team turned in a determined performance at the Marion Invitational on May 15, finishing fourth among nine competing schools. While the team narrowly missed a podium finish, the spotlight shone brightly on senior Samuel Groeschl, who tied for medalist honors with an impressive round of 73.

Groeschl, a seasoned senior, carded a 39 on the front nine and caught fire on the back nine, scoring a 34 to match Amherst’s Trent Simonis for the top individual spot.

Marathon captured the team title with a cumulative score of 336, followed by Amherst (348) and host Marion (355). Iola-Scandinavia posted a 362, only seven strokes out of third place, showing strong competitiveness in a tightly bunched field.

Supporting Groeschl’s standout effort was sophomore Mike Kirsme, who turned in a solid round of 80, helping to anchor the team’s scoring. Sophomore Dawson Nusz followed with a 98, while fellow sophomore Palatip Miyamae added a 111. Freshman Aidan Giefer rounded out the team’s lineup with a score of 124, gaining valuable varsity experience.
