CONTRACT EXTENSION: Iola native Tim Polasek received a multi-year contract extension as head football coach at North Dakota State. This move comes after a weekend in which Polasek was considered a front-runner for multiple FBS jobs, including Oregon State. The new contract runs for seven years and includes more money to go towards the NDSU coaching staff and other program resources. In other news, Polasek is one of 15 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award, presented to the FCS national coach of the year. The winner will be announced Dec. 4. Congratulations!

FOOD BOX DISTRIBUTION: The Iola Food Pantry at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will hold a No Questions Asked Food Box Giveaway on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 3-6 p.m. It is a drive-up pickup system. Drive south of John Street from State Street to the church, and volunteers will hand out the boxes. Churches, organizations, the Iola-Scandinavia High School DECA Club food drive, and individuals have donated the food items. NUCLEAR PLANTS: One bill would create an energy tax credit for nuclear facilities that go online after 2030, and another would create up to five years of tax credit for construction materials to build a facility. Read the Just the News article here.

CONGRESSIONAL MAP CHALLENGES: The Wisconsin Supreme Court sent a pair of challenges to the state’s congressional maps to three-judge panels on Tuesday, Nov. 25. One was a challenge from Elizabeth Bothfeld in Dane County Court, and the other was from the Wisconsin Business Leaders for Democracy and a group of individual voters. Both cases argue that Wisconsin’s current maps were gerrymandered and created unconstitutionally. Read the Just the News here.

LOST US STATE: The State of Franklin existed from 1844-48. It was located on Overhill Cherokee land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River and comprised four counties. The counties are now part of Tennessee, but had been part of North Carolina.
