In a tense and tightly contested BABA South Central Division battle on Wednesday night, July 30, Plover edged Scandinavia 1-0 with a dramatic walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game delivered a classic pitcher’s duel that remained scoreless until the final frame.
Josh Opiola earned the win for Plover, delivering a shutout performance that stymied Scandinavia’s lineup throughout the night. Opposing him was Cyle Zblewski, who also pitched masterfully for Scandinavia but was tagged with the loss after giving up the decisive hit in the final inning.
The pivotal moment came with Kaden Thauer at the plate. After a tight sequence of pitches, Thauer delivered a clutch hit to drive in Chase Geyer, who scored the winning run. Thauer finished the night 1-for-4 with the game’s lone RBI, while Geyer went 2-for-3 and sparked the decisive rally.
Plover also received a strong offensive contribution from Josh Marcione, who went 2-for-3 including a double, helping to set the tone early even as scoring opportunities were few and far between.
Scandinavia’s offense, though limited, had its moments. RJ Rosenthal led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, and Caleb Bembenek chipped in by going 1-for-3. Still, the Scandinavia bats couldn’t muster the run support Zblewski needed, despite keeping the game knotted into the late innings.
