ABSENTEE BALLOTS: If you wish to file an absentee ballot in the April 1 election, go online to myvote.wi.gov.
SPRING TRAIL RACE: The Iola Winter Sports Club will host a Spring Trail Race of 5k and 15k on Saturday, April 19. The 5k is a winding course moving primarily over ski trail this is a perfect course for people looking to dip their foot into trail racing or reminisce on their high school cross-country days. The 15k course is a more technical course with singletrack trail and lung-busting climbs. The 15k starts at 9 a.m. and the 5k starts at 9:15 a.m. There will also be a free kids 1k race weather permitting. Food and drinks will be available to purchase in the Chalet. Cost is $20 per race. In-person registration will be available from 8-8:45 a.m. the day of the race. For more info go here.
TOURNAMENT NEWS: The Iola-Scandinavia Varsity Boys’ basketball team, seeded third, will play the winner of Weyauwega-Fremont and Algoma at home on March 7 at 7 p.m.

VEL PHILLIPS SPECIAL DAY OF OBSERVANCE: The Legislative Black Caucus proposed Tuesday that Wisconsin make Vel Phillips’ birthday — Feb. 18 — a special day of observance in Wisconsin schools. Phillips was Wisconsin’s first Black statewide elected official, serving as secretary of state from 1979 to 1983. She also served as Wisconsin’s first Black judge and the first woman judge in Milwaukee County and was the first Black woman to graduate from University of Wisconsin Law School.
EVERS BUDGET WORD CHANGES CONTROVERSY: Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers introduced a budget bill this week that calls mothers an “inseminated person” and switches both mother and father to “parent who gave birth.” Evers crossed out the words “man,” “father,” “mother,” and “wife” in statutory language included in his budget bill.
