Interesting Facts

While browsing the internet, some interesting facts emerge that are worth sharing. These are a few recently seen.

PEGGY NICKNAME: It might be puzzling how Peg became a nickname for Margaret. Well, blame it on the classic medieval pattern of rhyming nicknames. In Middle English, Margaret was commonly shortened to Meg or Mog. From there, medieval English speakers — famous for inventing playful, rhymed pet names that switched up the first letters of a name — spun off new versions. Playing with “m” and “r” names was especially common. Meg became Peg, and Meggy became Peggy. The Daisy nickname for Margaret is French, deriving from Marguerite, meaning daisy.

OLYMPIC EMPEROR CHAMPION: Which Emperor won every event he participated in? It was Roman Emperor Nero in the year 66 BC. Even though he fell off his chariot, he was declared the winner anyway. Back then, the Olympics also had musical events, and he showed off his acting and lyre-playing skills.
