Marlin Robert Hines

December 18, 1932 – June 22, 2024

Marlin Robert Hines, 91, of Iola, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024. He resided at The Willows in Iola where he was known as “the gentleman.”

He was born on Dec. 18, 1932, in Marne, Michigan, to George and Mary Esther (Robinson) Hines.

Marlin married Kathryn Dangerfield in 1956 and they later divorced.

Marlin spent his early years working on the farm. He served in the US Army from 1952-54. He later went into masonry work creating beautiful brick and stone fireplaces and many basement and business structures in the Iola area. He laid the block on the Iola Ambulance Garage adjacent to Jody’s Sport Shop and additions at the Veteran’s Home in King.

He enjoyed taking all seven kids fishing and snowmobiling. Work took him to Colorado, then Missouri, where he retired from bricklaying. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and yard work.

A highlight of the Hines family was annual fishing trips to Leech Lake which started in 1996 and continues today. He also enjoyed karaoke and country music which he passed down to his family. He continued to be a Packer fan wherever he lived. He returned to Iola in 2020 and enjoyed his final years overlooking Keatings Lake and spending lots of time with his family.

He is survived by his children Douglas (Linda) Hines, Jean Hines Oberstadt, Dale (Sheri) Hines, Darrell (Mary) Hines, Jaci (Glenn) Tetzlaff, Jill (Tom) Beirl and Donny Hines; 19 grandchildren Angela (Jeremy) Bellile, Amanda (Tom) Darden, Shaon Hines (Gaston), Ashley (Matt) Gunderson, Tyler (Elaina) Hines, Scott (Meggie) Oberstadt, Avery (Megan) Oberstadt, Brian (Heidi) Oberstadt, Mara (Bobby) Schultz, Mathew Hines, Kyle Bauman, Seth Patoka, Tannah (Sam) Frawley, Micheal Hines, Christopher Hines, Joe Tetzlaff, Jonathon (Becca) Tetzlaff, Mackenzie Kathryn, Allison Beirl; 26 great-grandchildren Brayden and Hannah Bellile, Shannon, Sabrina and Sydney Darden, Austin and Aria Gunderson, Henry and sibling (expected in September) Hines, Ian and Reid Oberstadt, Laney and Kyler Chapman, Lilyana and Carter Oberstadt, Theodore and Benjamin Oberstadt, Adilyn, Colton, Daxton and Grayson Schultz, Mallory and Nathan Hines, Natalie and Ben Bauman, Dean Patoka, Winnie Frawley; one great-great-grandchild Hudson; sisters Charlotte Schmid of Wisconsin, Joyce Bowden of Arizona, Mildred Olivet of Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews; and Shirley’s family in Cameron, Missouri, Doug (Carol) Henderson, Blake and family and Lisa Coffman, and Kerry Evans and family.

He was preceded in death by brother Georgie Hines, parents George and Esther Hines, sister Ruth Ferguson, partner of 33 years Shirley Curtis, brothers-in-law Jackson Bowden, Gerald Olivet, Robert Schmid, and Brian Ferguson.

The Funeral Service for Marlin will be held on Thursday, June 27, at 11 a.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Iola with Rev. Dale Wilson officiating. The visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9-10:45 a.m.  The interment will be at Central Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in King, Wisconsin.
