Letter: Fishing should remain affordable for Wisconsinites

By State Sen. Cory Tomczyk

As fishing season kicks off across Wisconsin, families are hitting the water to enjoy a tradition that’s part of our way of life. That’s why Governor Evers’ proposal to raise fishing license fees by 50 percent — from $20 to $30 — is so frustrating.

This is the first increase in nearly two decades, and it comes at a time when Wisconsin families are already feeling the pinch. Fishing, a right enshrined in the Wisconsin State Constitution, shouldn’t become a luxury — it should remain affordable and accessible for everyone.

Republicans in the Legislature are standing firmly against this unnecessary fee hike. We understand that fishing supports local economies, builds family bonds, and connects us to our great outdoors. Unlike Governor Evers, we won’t punish sportsmen and women for enjoying Wisconsin’s natural beauty.

Our commitment is clear: we support hunters, anglers, and all who enjoy Wisconsin’s rich outdoor heritage. We’ll keep fighting to protect access and affordability — because Wisconsin traditions deserve to be preserved, not priced out.
