The Village of Iola Board is set to address significant community matters at its upcoming meeting on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Iola Village Hall. The board will hold public hearings on a proposed sewer rate increase and a new vacant building ordinance, followed by a vote on both measures.
Other agenda items include the ratification of a new public works vehicle, the adoption of updated residential and commercial codes, and preparations for upcoming assessment meetings in May.
Public Hearing on sewer rate increase
Residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on a proposed increase in sewer rates during a scheduled public hearing. The board is considering raising rates to offset maintenance costs and system improvements. Village officials have cited aging infrastructure and rising operational expenses as key reasons for the potential hike. If approved, the new rates would go into effect later this year.
Public Hearing on Vacant Building Ordinance
The board will also hear public feedback on Resolution 2025-3, a proposed ordinance aimed at addressing vacant buildings within the village. The measure is designed to encourage property owners to maintain unoccupied structures and prevent potential safety hazards or neighborhood deterioration. If adopted, property owners may be required to register vacant buildings and comply with upkeep standards to avoid penalties.
Another major decision will be the adoption of Resolution 2025-4, which updates the village’s residential and commercial building codes. These changes aim to align Iola’s regulations with modern safety standards and state guidelines.
The board is expected to finalize the purchase of a 2013 International 7400 dump truck equipped with a plow and spreader. This vehicle will replace the village’s aging 1995 Ford truck, which will be listed for auction.
The board will also set dates for key assessment meetings, including an Open Book meeting on May 13, and a Board of Review session on May 20. These meetings provide property owners the chance to review their property assessments and challenge valuations if necessary.
