Donors will receive e-gift cards, homemade desserts, and a chance to win big

Looking for an easy way to make a difference in your community? The Iola Lions, in partnership with the Red Cross, invite everyone to participate in their upcoming blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Mishler Room at the Iola-Scandinavia Fitness and Aquatic Center.
To pre-register for the blood drive, community members can call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org.
Every donor will receive a free $20 e-gift card as a thank you for their generosity. In addition, those who come to donate can enjoy a homemade dessert lovingly prepared by a Lions volunteer. All participants will automatically be entered for a chance to win one of three larger gift cards. And, perhaps best of all, donors will experience the satisfaction of knowing they are helping someone in need.
Our community’s impact
Thanks to the generosity of local donors, the last two blood drives met or surpassed all donation goals. In September, 37 units of blood were collected — enough to help up to 111 people who may be facing serious medical challenges such as cancer, surgery recovery, or the aftermath of an accident. Many of these recipients could be friends, family, or neighbors right here in the community.
A handful of donors were deferred at the last drive due to medical reasons. To help ensure eligibility, the Iola Lions recommend that donors limit their caffeine intake on the morning of the drive. Those concerned about their hemoglobin count are encouraged to eat iron-rich foods like beef, liver, apricots, and spinach in the days leading up to their donation.
Three additional blood drive dates are already set for 2026: Jan. 21, March 18, and June 3.
The Iola Lions extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has donated and also appreciate the Iola-Scandinavia Fitness & Aquatic Center for providing a welcoming venue for these important events. Organizers hope to see a strong turnout on Nov. 12.
