Iola Historical Society to explore Register of Deeds as a historic resource at February meeting

The Iola Historical Society will convene for its February meeting on Monday, Feb. 24, at the Machine Shed, 222 Depot Street, Iola.

The event will begin with a board meeting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the membership meeting at 6:30 p.m., where members will discuss upcoming events and initiatives.

The highlight of the evening will be a 7 p.m. presentation by Michael Mazemke and Jeremy Schoenike, titled “Exploring the Register of Deeds as a Historic Resource.”

During the board and membership meetings, attendees will review plans for key events in the coming months, including:

  • Memorial Day Salute to Veterans Pork Roast – Set for Monday, May 26, 2025, this annual event will honor local veterans with a community gathering and meal.
  • Strawberry Fest & Collectibles Fair – Scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2025, this summer festival will feature strawberry-themed treats, historical exhibits, and collectible displays.
  • Gausdal, Norway, Trip Gift Thought – Members will consider a historical connection between Iola and its Norwegian heritage.
  • Historic Iola Quilt? – Discussions will explore the possibility of creating or acquiring a quilt that represents the town’s history.

The Register of Deeds as a Historic Resource

At 7 p.m., guest speakers Michael Mazemke and Jeremy Schoenike will delve into how the Register of Deeds can serve as a valuable tool for uncovering historical information. This program will explore records such as land deeds, property transfers, and family histories, providing insights into Iola’s past and its development over time.
