Iola Historical Society June 26 meeting minutes

The Iola Historical Society held its board meeting on June 26, at 5:31 p.m., with Cliff presiding. George was absent.

The meeting commenced with the review of April and May meeting minutes. Sarah motioned to accept the Secretary’s report, seconded by Bonny, and the motion passed without discussion.

During the meeting, Tom Fucik, retired treasurer, stood in for George and presented the Treasurer’s report for May. The report highlighted the successful Memorial Day event, with net results looking good. Program expenses were slightly down, and the cost of the Window publication was allocated under “cost of membership.” The board approved the Treasurer’s report without discussion, following a motion from Lee and a second from Sarah.

Cliff proposed raising prices for next year’s Memorial Day event to $14 for adults and $7 for children, with Veterans continuing to receive a free meal. Additionally, the prices for the Strawberry Fest were suggested to increase to $6 for strawberry shortcake, while hot dog prices remained at $5. The board approved both pricing changes. Bonny pointed out the need to adjust hot dog orders for the event based on this year’s experience, and Charlie requested a few buns for pork sandwiches.

The Strawberry Fest raised $1,017 in food sales, received $158 in donations, and $31 in appraisals. However, it was noted that promotion of the appraisal aspect of the event could have been better and will be improved next year. The arrangement of cashiers was discussed, with the consensus being that for the Strawberry Fest, the cashier should be at the end of the food line to ensure accurate charging for orders.

The meeting concluded with the approval of the pricing changes for future events and the announcement of upcoming activities, such as the raffle for the Taste of Norway. Additionally, Lee suggested a cost-effective flooring idea for the museum’s back room, and Charlie estimated that $700 to $800 of donations were collected in honor of Sharon Peterson.

At 6:35 pm, the Membership Meeting began with Cliff leading the Pledge of Allegiance, and 16 people were present. The Secretary’s reports for April and May were accepted without discussion. Tom presented the financial report, highlighting the positive cash position and improving endowment account due to better investment markets. The results of the Memorial Day event would be finalized in June. The meeting adjourned at 7:05 pm.

During the Program segment, members showcased interesting historical items, including old photos, books, and 3D-printed objects. Lee shared his discovery of an Iola Herald article mentioning Cliff Mishler’s early achievements in the coin collecting community.
