Nature enthusiasts and families seeking a vibrant autumn adventure are invited to participate in the annual Ice Age Trail Fall Hike-a-Thon, hosted by the Portage/Waupaca County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Iola Winter Sports Club, located at E398 County Road MM, just north of Iola.

Hikers will be treated to a spectacular display of fall colors as they traverse the scenic trail, which winds through a remarkable landscape shaped by ancient glaciers. Along the route, participants can observe unique geological features such as kettles — depressions carved by retreating ice — along with moraines, eskers, and glacial erratics, offering an educational and visually stunning experience.

The journey begins at the Grand Stone Staircase and leads hikers to a tranquil boardwalk overlooking the northern marsh — a perfect spot for reflection amid nature’s beauty. Trail lengths range from a short 3-mile hike (from the chalet to Stoltenberg Road and back) to a more challenging 12-mile trek (from the chalet to Sunset Lake Road and back), with maps available for all routes.

Registration will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. at the Iola Winter Sports Club Chalet. Individuals are asked to donate $10, or $25 per family, with all proceeds supporting local trail development and maintenance. The Ice Age Trail relies entirely on volunteer efforts for upkeep, and additional donations are welcome (cash or check accepted).

Registered hikers will receive an Ice Age Trail bandanna and can select a glacial rock as a keepsake. Four water and apple stations will be placed along the trail, ensuring participants stay refreshed. Leashed dogs are invited to join the fun, and shuttle service will be available from various points along the route for those who need a ride back to the chalet.
