I-S students practice for Guys and Dolls amid auditorium renovation campaign

School gears up for February performances while launching a capital campaign for auditorium upgrades

The stage is set for a spectacular production as the Iola-Scandinavia School Musical Theater Department proudly presents Guys and Dolls from Feb. 14-16. With over 60 students participating in the cast, stage crew, and live pit orchestra, the production promises to continue the tradition of delivering unforgettable performances to a packed house.

This year’s production holds extra significance as it coincides with the launch of a capital campaign to refurbish the high school auditorium. The campaign aims to enhance the theater experience for students and the community by upgrading lighting, sound systems, and seating. The initiative, backed by a $75,000 pledge from the Krause Foundation and an existing $50,000 fund, marks a pivotal step toward achieving these goals.

Anticipation builds for Guys and Dolls

The excitement is palpable as students, directors, and community members count down the days to opening night. Rehearsals, which began in early November, showcase the dedication and talent of the participants. According to Program Coordinator Dale Bestul, the musical has become an annual highlight for the district.

“The commitment from our students and community is incredible,” said Bestul. “Last year, all four performances sold out, and we anticipate the same enthusiasm this year.”

This year’s production of Guys and Dolls will feature classic numbers like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” The show is widely regarded as a Broadway treasure, and its vibrant storytelling and dynamic characters offer the perfect platform for student performers to shine.

Capital Campaign Kickoff

To kick off the capital campaign, the Krause Foundation has made a three-year $75,000 pledge towards the project.

The auditorium, which has served the district for decades, is in dire need of upgrades to meet modern performance standards. The capital campaign is designed to address these needs, ensuring that future productions can maintain the high-quality experience audiences have come to expect.

Key highlights of the campaign to date include:

  • A $75,000 pledge from the Krause Foundation over three years.
  • Contributions from the school district to create a new sound and lighting booth as part of a larger high school and middle school remodeling project.
  • A sponsorship program inviting local businesses and individuals to invest in the arts.

How to get involved

Community members are encouraged to attend the performances and support the capital campaign in any way they can. Whether through sponsorships, donations, or simply spreading the word, every effort counts toward achieving the shared vision of an improved auditorium.
