I-S Softball team beats Bonduel 1-0 in 9-inning pitchers’ duel

By Tom Anderson, Head Coach

BONDUEL – It took nine innings, but the Iola-Scandinavia varsity softball team beat conference rival Bonduel, 1-0, on Tuesday, April 9. The Thunderbirds are 2-0 in conference and 2-1 overall.

In the top of the ninth inning, sophomore Brylee Jueds reached base on an error and senior Myah Heschke followed with a single to centerfield.  Senior Maci Heschke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore Maya Munoz followed with a fielder’s choice groundout to a diving shortstop which scored Jueds from third base for the lone run of the game. Bonduel went quietly down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Thunderbirds the win.

Senior pitcher Julia Munoz pitched all nine innings to earn the victory. She allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters. The T-Bird defense committed four errors in the game, but they managed to work around them and also made several nice defensive plays.

The junior varsity team finally got a chance to play, and the young Thunderbirds beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 16-1 at home for their first game of the season on Tuesday, April 9. The T-Birds had their previous five games canceled due to weather.

The varsity team and junior varsity teams will play at Amherst on Thursday, April 11. The varsity game will start at 4:30 p.m. while the JV game will follow starting about 6:15 p.m.
