The Iola-Scandinavia Varsity Softball Team beat Bonduel 2-1 in a key CWC-East match-up that took about 75 minutes to play on Monday, April 22. The win improves the Thunderbirds record to 7-0 in conference and 8-3 overall.
With two outs and the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning and Brooklyn Berrens on first base, Brylee Jueds hit a double off the left-field fence to score Berrens and give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead. Bonduel managed to get a runner on first in the seventh inning, but the T-Bird defense held for the win.
Bonduel scored the first run in the game to take a 1-0 lead. Iola-Scandinavia responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1. After Julia Munoz singled and the Thunderbirds eventually loaded the bases, Maya Munoz hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Julia Munoz from third.
The Bears outhit the T-Birds 6-5. Myah Heschke had two hits for the T-Birds including a double in the second inning.
Pitcher Julia Munoz went the distance to earn the win. She had only one walk while striking out 13 batters.
The junior varsity team lost at Auburndale 9-7 on Monday, April 22. The loss drops the junior varsity record to 3-3.
The varsity team will travel to Manawa on Tuesday, April 23, to play a key conference doubleheader with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m. The JV team will host Waupaca on Tuesday, April 23, starting at 4:30 p.m.
