WITTENBERG – Leading 3-0, the Iola-Scandinavia varsity softball team gave up six runs to Wittenberg-Birnamwood in the fifth inning and allowed the Chargers one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie to lose the game, 7-6, on Friday, May 3.
The Thunderbirds drop to 9-2 in conference and 10-5 overall.
The T-Birds outhit Wittenberg-Birnamwood 11-10. Brooklyn Berrens, Brylee Jueds, and Maya Munoz each had two hits. Berrens had two doubles and one RBI. Jueds had a two-out bases-loaded double that scored three runs to tie the game 6-6 in the sixth inning. Jueds finished with four RBIs.
Julia Munoz pitched 6⅔ innings in taking the loss. She allowed three walks and had 12 strikeouts. The Thunderbird defense struggled to make plays and committed two errors in the game.
The junior varsity team won one and lost one at a four-team tournament in Waupun on Friday, May 3. The Thunderbirds lost to Oakfield 10-0 in the first game but beat Columbus 11-10 in the second game. The JV record is 6-5 overall.
The varsity team is scheduled to host Amherst in a conference game while the junior varsity team plays at Wittenberg on Monday, May 6. Both games are set to start at 4:30 p.m.
