WITTENBERG – The Iola-Scandinavia softball team lost at Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 7-2, in a CWC-East conference game on Thursday, May 15. The loss drops the Thunderbirds’ record to 3-9 in conference and 8-10 overall.
Trailing 2-0, the T-Birds scored two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. The Chargers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead and added two more runs in the fifth inning and one more run in the sixth inning for the final score.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood edged Iola-Scandinavia in hits, 8-7. Maya Munoz and Emma Printz each had two hits for the Thunderbirds. Printz had a double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the fourth inning. The T-Birds did miss several opportunities to score more runs by leaving eight runners on base for the game, including bases loaded in the first inning and two runners left on base in the fourth and seventh innings.
Rayanne Clendenning pitched all six innings in taking the loss for Iola-Scandinavia. Clendenning allowed four walks and had eight strikeouts. The Thunderbirds had three errors in the game.
The junior varsity team also lost at Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 8-5, on Thursday, May 15. The junior varsity record is 6-5.
The varsity team will play two non-conference games at Waupaca High School on Saturday, May 17. Iola-Scandinavia will play Marathon at 11:30 a.m. and Waupaca at 1 p.m.
