It took nine innings, but the Iola-Scandinavia varsity softball team finally pushed a run across the plate to beat Weyauwega-Fremont, 1-0, in a true pitchers’ duel.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, freshman pinch-hitter Sophia Munoz drew a walk. Sophomore Maya Munoz singled to advance Sophia Munoz to third base. Senior Abby Isermann singled to right field to score Sophia Munoz from third to give the Thunderbirds the dramatic win.
The T-Birds improve their conference record to 4-0 and overall record to 5-2. The Warhawks record drops to 1-2 in conference and 3-5 overall.
Iola-Scandinavia senior Julia Munoz pitched all nine innings to earn the shutout win. She had no walks and struck out eight batters. The T-Bird defense committed no errors in the game.
For Weyauwega-Fremont, junior pitcher Olivia Witkowski went the distance in taking the loss. Witkowski had four walks and struck out 11 batters. The Warhawks defense committed two errors.
For the Thunderbirds, Brooklyn Berrens and Abby Isermann each had two hits. For Weyauwega-Fremont, Riley Delwiche, Olivia Witkowski, and Hailey Wohlt each had two hits. Witkowski had a double in the fourth inning. The Thunderbirds left six runners on base while the Warhawks left seven runners on base for the game.
The varsity team will travel to Menominee Indian on Tuesday, April 16, starting at 4:30 p.m. The JV team will play Pacelli at home starting at 4:15 p.m.
