I-S Softball clinches share of CWC-East title with win over Wega-Fremont

WEYAUWEGA – The Iola-Scandinavia varsity softball team clinched at least a share of the CWC-East title with a 3-2 over Weyauwega-Fremont on Thursday, May 9.

The Thunderbirds can claim sole conference championship honors with a win at Shiocton on Tuesday, May 14. The win improves the T-Birds conference record to 10-3 and their overall record to 11-7.

Brooklyn Berrens had a two-run double.

After two scoreless innings, the T-Birds took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Brooklyn Berrens hit a double to score Katie Rosenthal and Ava Printz. The Warhawks scored a run in the fourth inning to make the score, 2-1.

Abby Isermann drove in the winning run.

The Thunderbirds then scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning. Myah Heschke reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball. Abby Isermann delivered a single to left field to score Heschke from second to give the T-Birds a 3-1 lead. Weyauwega-Fremont scored a run in the seventh inning, but the T-Bird defense shut down the Warhawk rally for the win. 

Iola-Scandinavia outhit Weyauwega-Fremont 9-7. Maci Heschke, Maya Munoz, and Ava Printz each had two hits for the Thunderbirds.

Julia Munoz was the winning pitcher.

Starting pitcher Julia Munoz went the distance to claim the win. She allowed two walks while striking out seven batters. The T-Bird defense played much better committing only one error in the game.

The junior varsity team beat Waupaca 9-4 on Thursday, May 9. The JV record is 7-6 overall.

The varsity team is scheduled to play two non-conference games at home on Saturday, May 11.  Iola-Scandinavia will play Waupaca starting at 10 a.m. and will play Marathon starting about 1: p.m. Waupaca and Marathon will play each other starting about 11:30 a.m.
