I-S School Board to address major referendum and rezoning updates at upcoming meeting

The School District of Iola-Scandinavia’s Board of Education will convene on Monday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m. in Elementary School, Room #6, 450 Division Street, Iola, to address key agenda items including referendum updates, rezoning school property, and approval of the 2025-26 school calendar. This meeting, open for public observation, includes a designated public input session requiring pre-registration.

The meeting will open with procedural formalities, including the approval of the agenda and a consent agenda covering meeting minutes, financial audits, and fundraiser requests. Fundraising activities set for approval include events such as the Softball Rib Fest (March 2), Egg My House (April 19), high school baseball Calendar Raffle (February), high school baseball Meat Raffle (April) and more. Notable donations, including a $1,000 contribution from Our Saviors Lutheran Church, will also be acknowledged.

A highlight of the evening will be a presentation by research and technical writing students, offering the board and attendees a glimpse into the academic progress within the district.

Major board actions planned

Referendum Updates and Hoffman Approvals: The board is expected to deliberate updates related to the district’s ongoing referendum and review key information and approvals presented by Hoffman representatives. These discussions could pave the way for future district advancements.

Rezoning of School Property: Under the Building & Grounds Committee, Chairperson Boris will present information about rezoning school property to conform to Village of Iola zoning. While no immediate decisions are expected, the discussion is anticipated to set the stage for future developments. The Village of Iola will hold a public hearing for all zoning map changes on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Iola Village Hall.

Administrative and Committee Reports

Reports from the administration will provide updates on financial activities, curriculum developments, and transportation operations. Committees such as Finance, Personnel, and Curriculum will present findings and recommendations, including proposed middle school and high school course requests for the upcoming academic year.

New business items on the agenda include plans for a Spanish trip in 2026, approval of the 2025-26 school calendar, and determinations about open enrollment spaces for special education and general education for the 2025-26 school year.

The Board will receive a resignation letter from Transportation Director Gerald Trzebiatowski effective June of this year.

The meeting will conclude with an executive session for a performance evaluation of the district administrator. If necessary, the board will reconvene in open session to act on any decisions discussed privately.

The board will set dates for future meetings, including a working committee meeting on Feb. 3, and the next regular board meeting on Feb. 10, both in Elementary School Room #6 at 6 p.m.
