The Town of Helvetia Board convened for its regular meeting at the Town Hall on Jan. 6, where Chairman Jeff Oppor and all board members approved routine financial matters, finalized a land sale, authorized the purchase of new tables for the Town Hall, and received an announcement from the longtime clerk about his impending departure, actions that ensured ongoing town operations and addressed administrative continuity amid a transition in key personnel.
During public input, Hines, who had served as Helvetia Town Clerk for more than 30 years, announced his decision to step down after the April town board meeting. The board plans to appoint a new clerk to complete the remainder of the two-year term.
The meeting began at 7 p.m. with Oppor calling it to order, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. All board members were present, along with two town residents.
Clerk Doug Hines read the minutes from the previous meeting, which were approved on a motion by Mike Grassl, seconded by Justin Hintz.
The board then approved and paid town bills on a motion by Hintz, seconded by Grassl. The treasurer’s report was presented and approved on a motion by Grassl, seconded by Hintz.
Under new business, the board noted that the comprehensive plan change for Olson/Oppor had been completed. The sale of the parcel of land numbered 08 36 24 5, located at the corner of Highway 161 and Campbell Lake Road, was finalized with buyers Thomas and Cheryl Ostrowski.
Ongoing town hall projects were discussed, and the board approved the purchase of seven new folding tables on a motion by Grassl, seconded by Hintz. Chad Bestul reported on plowing and sanding town roads as needed, noting high demand for sanding that year and a current shortage of sand affecting the town and other county units.
