Helvetia Town Board approves propane contract, repairs, and more at august meeting

On Aug. 5, the Helvetia Town Board convened at the Town Hall for its regular monthly meeting, where all board members and eight residents gathered to discuss and vote on a range of local issues, including approving a new propane contract, passing resolutions, and reviewing road maintenance projects.

The meeting, led by Chairman Jeff Oppor, began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the approval of the previous meeting’s minutes, financial reports, and the payment of town bills. Treasurer and clerk reports were presented and approved by the board.

New business highlights

No changes were reported regarding Yah’s Refuge LLC. The board unanimously passed an ordinance and resolution supporting the Olson/Oppor conditional use application. Chairman Oppor signed a survey map for the Draphal property.

Liane Gruenwald updated the board on postcard submissions collected for the ongoing garbage selection process. A propane contract for the season was approved with Countryside Propane at $1.49 per gallon, securing energy needs for the community.

Board member Justin Hintz reported ongoing talks with Iola schools regarding ceiling tile replacements.

Plans were approved to spray joint foam in the Town Hall basement to seal cracks, and Chairman Oppor is seeking a carpenter for shelter house ceiling repairs. The latest water quality test was successful, and Joe Ambacher will address a cracked well casing cover.

Chairman Oppor attended the recent Fire and Ambulance meeting, where discussions included potential upgrades for a fire truck.

Road maintenance and public works

The board reviewed ongoing and completed road projects. Chairman Oppor will reach out to the county about a contract for the upcoming year. Recent work by Scott’s Construction and the Waupaca County Highway Department included repairs and patching, particularly addressing a problem area on Swamp Road. Chad Bestul continues to handle road grading and patching, while Kelly Land is scheduled to carry out fall mowing duties.
