RECREATION PLAN FOR IOLA: The Village of Iola is developing an Outdoor Recreation Plan to guide park improvements and secure grants. Proposed projects include ATV trails, a kayak launch, murals, a splash pad, holiday lights, livestream cameras, a farmers market, an amphitheater, an ice rink, and upgrades to Taylor Field. IOLA VILLAGE ORDINANCE BOOK: A public hearing to adopt the Village of Iola’s new Ordinance Book with updated and codified municipal ordinances on Tuesday, March 10, at 5:30 p.m. Citizens can provide comments. Copies of the proposed Ordinance Book are available for public review at the clerk’s office at 180 South Main Street during regular posted business hours.

ARREST IN MORGAN CASE: Waupaca County sheriff’s investigators arrested a 31-year-old woman in the six-year-old disappearance of Jon “Jake” Morgan, last seen in King on March 6, 2020, and reported missing days later. Desiree Osman was charged Thursday with first-degree reckless homicide, hiding a corpse, and heroin delivery. She also faces two felony bail-jumping counts. Read the WBAY story here.

WISCONSIN TAXES: The state is the 8th highest in property taxes, according to Rocket Mortgage, and 9th highest in income taxes, according to Experian.

HOUSING LEGISLATION: The Badger Institute praised Gov. Tony Evers and Republican lawmakers for passing the “Truth in Planning” bill (AB453), which aims to boost housing supply and lower costs. The law requires municipalities to align zoning with comprehensive plans, specifying where and how densely homes can be built in five-year increments over 20 years, while preserving local control over growth decisions. EDUCATION LAWSUIT: Based on the premise that the Wisconsin Constitution “guarantees” every child the right to a “sound basic education without tuition”, Law Forward has filed suit against the Wisconsin Legislature for failing to adequately fund public schools. For more info, go here.

ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL: Wisconsin Democrats have introduced LRB 5643 related to permitting certain “qualified individuals to make a request for medication for the purpose of ending their lives and providing a penalty.” The Wisconsin resident would have to be at least 18 years old, mentally capable, have a terminal disease with less than six months to live.
