PETITION PAYMENTS PROHIBITION: Democratic legislators on April 10 introduced Assembly Bill 227, which would expand Wisconsin’s existing election bribery laws to also prohibit people from making payments to voters in exchange for signing petitions during an election period. The bill was introduced just nine days after the April 1 election, before which Elon Musk offered the public $100 to sign a petition opposing “activist judges.” At an event just two days before the election, Musk gave two Wisconsin voters $1 million checks.
REPUBLICANS WANT COOPERATION: Wisconsin’s Assembly Republican leadership is asking Gov. Tony Evers to rescind a memo from the Department of Administration asking state employees not to answer questions from a federal agent, give access to systems or information, and to call the state Office of Legal Counsel. REPUBLICANS TWEAK STATE AID FORMULA: An analysis for Wisconsin Watch finds a statistically significant correlation between how a community votes and how much its shared revenue increased under the legislation known as Act 12. On average, each percentage point of GOP vote share corresponds to a 2.1% increase in shared revenue, according to calculations by Phil Rocco, associate professor of political science at Marquette University.
