Iola-Scandinavia finishes fifth at Shamrock Heights

The Amherst Falcons soared to victory at the Manawa Invitational on Wednesday, May 7, with a dominant team performance at Shamrock Heights Golf Course, posting a collective score of 346 to claim first place in a competitive eight-team field. Amherst senior Trent Simonis tied for second with a round of 81.
Iola-Scandinavia’s varsity golf team secured a respectable fifth-place finish, carding a team total of 376. While not enough to crack the top three, the Thunderbirds showcased resilience and potential, highlighted by senior Samuel Groeschl’s standout performance.
Groeschl emerged as Iola-Scandinavia’s top finisher, shooting an 88 to place 10th individually. His consistent play and leadership anchored the squad, providing a solid foundation for the team’s overall effort.
Sophomore Mike Kirmse followed closely behind, firing a 90. Juniors Preston Poehlman and Ryan Barden scored 98 and 100, respectively, while sophomore Dawson Nusz rounded out the Thunderbirds’ scorecard with a 105.
Top individual honors of the day went to Weyauwega-Fremont’s Charles Mueller, who delivered the lowest round with a 78. Manawa’s own Tate Drummond impressed on his home course, finishing close behind with an 81.
Lena claimed second place as a team with a 358, putting up a spirited fight against Amherst.
